Robin Robertson / Sobre el tiempo















En el tiempo que me llevó contener la respiración
y deslizarme bajo el agua de la bañera
-para escuchar el ruido sordo de la sangre en las venas
y después salir a la superficie-,
mis padres habían muerto,
la casa había sido vendida y ahora
estaban demoliéndola en torno a mí,
pared por pared, con una bola y una cadena.
Nado un largo bajo el agua
y salgo por el extremo opuesto, boqueando,
para descubrir que mi matrimonio se acabó,
mis hijas crecieron y sentaron cabeza,
la piel de mis brazos y mis piernas
se afloja
y este corazón late
como si no existiese el mañana.

ABOUT TIME

In the time it took to hold my breath
and slip under the bathwater
– to hear the blood-thud in the veins,
for me to rise to the surface –
my parents had died,
the house had been sold and now
was being demolished around me,
wall by wall, with a ball and chain.
I swim one length underwater,
pulling myself up on the other side, gasping,
to find my marriage over,
my daughters grown and settled down,
the skin loosening
from my legs and arms
and this heart going
like there’s no tomorrow.
